SYDNEY - The New Zealand flag was raised on the Sydney Harbour Bridge on Sunday April 24 for the first time, in recognition of the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing.
It replaced the NSW state flag and took its place beside Australia’s national flag.
“We must never forget Anzac means Australian and New Zealand,” NSW Premier Bob Carr said. “On the 90th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, there can be no better way to symbolize the bond between our two nations.”
“Young Australians and New Zealanders – side by side – made the supreme sacrifice on the beaches and cliffs of Gallipoli,” he added.
The flags were lowered to half-mast from dawn on Anzac Day until midday when both flags would fly again fly at full mast.
