From early childhood, all Chinese people are exposed to relentless propaganda that says that the Chinese Communist Party is "great, honorable and correct." The adults, who to varying degrees have come to realize the falsehood behind these statements, do not tell the children the truth, because they live in constant fear of reprisal from the CCP. So the young people grow up thinking that it is honorable and glorious to become a party member.
There have been and still are some writers of conscience in China who have sought to discover and reveal the truth behind the CCP's deception. In China, however, could those bold and frank works be published? The only works of this nature that ever make it into the hands of the common people are those that are sufficiently hidden from the CCP's detailed examination. Also, many people are deterred from ever seeking the truth by the mere fact that so many people do join the CCP. The question in their minds is: "If the CCP is so bad, why does it have so many members?"
The way things are set up in China—economically and socially—if one wishes to make anything of their life, or even simply to survive, one is left with little choice but to join the CCP. Without affiliation with the CCP it is next to impossible to move up in society or to be successful. There is also the influence of fear—many people join the CCP so as not to become its target—a harsh bit of telling irony. So each generation follows the last, joining though not wanting to, and thus creating the impression for the next generation that the CCP is much supported by the Chinese people.
This has already become the hopeless situation that most Chinese are very familiar with. I have, however, recently heard some thoughts from my family that have given me new insight into the situation, and a new way of understanding why the CCP has such a large membership.
In one of the instances, the main character is the brother of my mother's colleague, whom I will refer to as "Mr. A." This person is a famous doctor from a city in Liaoning. He never cared for politics and is only interested in the technology of his profession, and has garnered acclaim for his medical skills. One day, the hospital required workers to fill out a personal situation form, and Mr. A's form was returned to him shortly after he submitted it. The supervisor pointed to a line that required the person filling out the form to identify himself as a "CCP member." Mr. A was surprised. He said, "I have never written to join the party, how can I have become a member?" The supervisor smiled and said, "How can a person like you not be a member, someone already added your name to the roster ages ago." Mr. A was speechless, as without knowing, he had been a member of the party for several years. He was in fact considered a member with some seniority.
In another instance, the main character, whom I'll refer to as "Mr. B," is the husband of another one of my mother's colleagues, a workshop director at a large factory. Similarly, not a CCP member, but when the same situation occurred for him, and his form was returned, he found he had been added as a CCP member. When Mr. B mentioned to the supervisor that he is not a Party member, the supervisor replied, "You are a hand in the workshop, how can you not be a Party member?"
Many Chinese have often wondered how there could be so many party members. The two examples given above do seem to shed some light on the situation.
Some people compare the CCP to the Koumintang, and some people compare the CCP to the Qing government. However, comparing the CCP to the Koumintang is insulting the Koumintang and comparing the CCP to the Qing government is insulting the Qing government. I have used the words "mean and shameless" to describe the CCP and I feel that I am insulting the very words to use them so. The nature of the CCP is so base and corrupt that the words do not exist to accurately describe it.
This article is meant as one more plea for people to quickly sever all ties with the CCP. It is precisely when we are weak and apathetic that the CCP can remain in control of China—it is because of such a state that it can perpetrate an atmosphere of fear and violence upon the Chinese people. It has deceived generation after generation, and seeks to create yet another generation of weak-minded, apathetic citizens to serve as its tools. So seize the chance to resign from the CCP and wash away the shame of ever having been connected to such a vile group, and in this way be sure to never again become the unwitting tool of evil.
