Another case of tainted food causing food poisoning has been reported in China, this time tea containing pesticide.
According to Xinhua News Agency, more than 20 people in the southern city of Beihai in the Guangxi region were hospitalized after drinking herb tea containing pesticide.
The victims, ranging in ages of 3 to 60, began exhibiting symptoms of food poisoning such as vomiting, fever and headache after drinking tea from a vendor this week, the report said.
Lax food safety codes are blamed for the recent rash of food poisoning. The most recent and deadliest scandal is the fake powdered milk that contained less than one third of the nutritional value, causing babies to come down with “big head disease.” Babies’ heads would swell as their body weight decreased. Some reports indicate that officials did not alert the public in an urgent manner even after many babies had died. The exact number of deaths is difficult to report as many poor rural families will just bury their dead.
