Tiananmen Mother Urges Dr. Jiang’s Release

The Epoch Times
Translated from the Chinese edition
Jun 18, 2004

Dr. Jiang Yanyong
“Tiananmen Mother” Ding Zilin, sent a letter to Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, requesting that Dr. Jiang Yanyong be immediately released. Dr. Jiang disclosed to the world the real situation of SARS in China last year, and, just before the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre he was detained by the government. Dr. Jiang’s detention came following a letter he wrote requesting that China’s central government redress the Massacre.

According to a report from Apple Daily, Ding Zilin said that Dr. Jiang and she became friends beginning last fall. On June 1, which was one day before Jiang Yanyong was detained, they talked to each other on the telephone.

In the letter to Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao, Ding Zilin said that she was not worried about the safety of Dr. Jiang initially, but became worried after he had been detained for so many days. She questioned Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao in the letter, "Why has a doctor who dares to tell the truth had his freedom of speech taken away by the government? What does this mean for a people or a nation? As the leaders of China, there is no need for me to tell you the answer."

After being detained by the Chinese government for two weeks, Dr. Jiang’s wife was released last Tuesday. However, Dr. Jiang is still detained because he refuses to admit that he is wrong. His wife asked their daughter in the United States not to disclose any further news to the media. She hopes her husband will soon be released.

According to a report from Chinese News Net, the Chairman of Army Hospital No. 301, Zhu Shijun, has personally demanded that Dr. Jiang admit that requesting redress for the Tiananmen Square Massacre was a serious mistake. However, Dr. Jiang rejected his demand. Later, Dr. Jiang was told that in order to get released he must admit that he regrets letting his friends look at his letter. However, he still has refused to comply.
