Inner Mongolia Earthquake Injures 100

Zhangguang News Net
Apr 01, 2004

On Wednesday, March 24, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck Inner Mongolia. Over one hundred have sustained injuries from the earthquake and its continued aftershocks.

The Chinese media reported that after the earthquake hit, 34 aftershocks struck four areas of Inner Mongolia's Xilinguolemeng region, damaging 29,000 buildings, seriously harming three, and lightly wounding 110.

The earthquake also damaged school buildings in 29 schools. Over 5000 children were unable to go to class, and economic losses totaled 400 billion yuan (roughly US $48 billion).

The Chinese People's Liberation Army and the Red Cross will send tents and cotton clothes to disaster areas, yet the disaster regions still need all sectors of society to contribute tents, food and medicine.
