Avoiding the Flu

By Franklin McCoy, MD

One of Dr. McCoy's tips for avoiding the flu: "Eat green, leafy vegetables, including broccoli, kale and brussel sprouts. Your mom was right when she encouraged you to eat these." (AFP)

The flu season is almost here. A flu vaccine shortage exists, so for those who have not yet received the flu vaccine—or even those who have—the following may be helpful for staying healthy this winter:

· Stay hydrated with water. Six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day should suffice, unless engaged in vigorous exertion, in which case, more would be desirable.
· Avoid alcohol, cigarettes and sweets. All these weaken the immune system and predispose to becoming ill.
· Take Vitamin C with bioflavonoids, at least 500 milligrams a day. Bioflavonoids are especially helpful for fighting infections. A general multivitamin enhances the function of the immune system.
· Avoid getting chilled and wet. These stresses predispose to illnesses.
· Eat green, leafy vegetables, including broccoli, kale and brussel sprouts. Your mom was right when she encouraged you to eat these.
· Get plenty of rest. Also helpful for the immune system.
· Develop a patient, forgiving attitude. Ever noticed how some people get a cold after having a heated argument? Upsetting emotions weaken the immune system.

Even if one does become ill while following the above, recovery is likely to be much more rapid by adhering to the above.

Have a healthy and happy winter.
